Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) is a leguminous and perennial herb and is significantly important due to its medicinal and agricultural applications. Its seeds contain 4% linolenic acids, 51% oleic acid, 10% stearic acid, and 19% palmitic acid. Numerous animal-based scientific studies have shown that butterfly pea offers wound healing, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, antilipidemic, antidiabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiasthmatic, nootropic, and diuretic properties. Authors have reported in many studies that these properties or activities are due to the presence of anthocyanins and flavanols. Its use has been widely reported in traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes, pain, inflammation, and fever.

Its flowers are being used as culinary agents in the deserts and rice. Its flowers are also used to make tea and other beverages. Most commonly honey and lemon are also used along with the butterfly tea to enhance the flavor.
